Oak wilt is the most damaging tree disease in Oklahoma. The fungus is most active April-June. Fresh cuts during that window are open invitations to infection. We won't trim oaks during oak wilt season except for genuine emergencies — and we seal those cuts immediately.
Late January through early March, while trees are dormant. Cuts heal cleanly, disease risk is low, and structure is visible without leaves. For oaks specifically, NEVER trim April-June (oak wilt season) — late winter only.
Most residential trimming jobs run $150-$800 depending on tree size and amount of work. Light shaping of a small tree might be $150. Heavy pruning of a large mature oak can run $600-$1,200. Removing storm-broken branches typically $200-$500.
Most mature trees benefit from light pruning every 3-5 years. Fast-growing species (Bradford pears, silver maples) need annual structural pruning to prevent splitting. Fruit trees need yearly trimming. Hazard pruning is as-needed.
Anything you can reach from the ground with hand tools and a small saw — yes. Anything requiring a ladder, climbing, or chainsaw work above shoulder height — hire a pro. Falls from trees and ladders are the #1 cause of homeowner injury, and your homeowner's insurance often won't cover injuries to you while doing work like that.
Only branches at least 10 feet clear of energized lines. Anything closer is utility company territory — call AEP/PSO and they'll send a crew at no cost to you. We never work on energized lines.
Topping is cutting off the top of a tree to reduce height. It's the worst thing you can do to a tree — promotes weak, unstable regrowth, creates entry points for disease, and ruins the tree's natural shape. We won't do it. If a tree is too tall for the location, the right answer is removal or selective height reduction by a certified arborist.
